As Chance the Rapper holds the Chicago rap universe in his hands, its actually his Savemoney partner – Joey Purp – who’s been putting out some of the city’s best work.
2016 saw the release of iiiDrops, an 11 track project featuring Vic Mensa, Saba and Chance himself on the hit song “GIRLS @.” His booming flow can be heard on Taylor Bennett’s Broad Shoulder’s, Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment’s Surf, and various other songs and projects.
But according to the emcee, new music is on the way.
While there is no set release date, Joey is in the midst of the Run it Up tour, and has a slate of festivals and appearances later in the spring and early summer. There’s no saying whether this will slow down the potential finish and release of the forthcoming Quarter Thing, but the drop of the project will have all eyes on it.
If iiiDrops can be used as a preview of Quarter Thing, the music world is in a good spot. While I’m just one person, songs like “CORNERSTORE” and “PHOTOBOOTH” have both earned spots in my regular music rotation. He combines quick, loud vocals with a well-produced beat and background track which often features a blend of horns and percussion.
